The Irish Druids and the shamrock
Share
Long before St. Patrick's, the shamrock played an important role in Irish culture. Especially with the spiritual tradition of the Druids, who were active in Ireland from around the 2nd century BC. Little is known about the Irish Druids, as they kept no records. It is known though that they were an educated class and played a pivotal role in Irish culture, advising kings and lords alike as high priests, counsellors, and teachers. With their deep reverence for nature, the name Druid itself comes from the Celtic, meaning knower of the oak tree. With their appreciation for all things in nature and the fact that they held the number three to be of real significance and considered it a mystical number. A lot of people believe that the Irish Druids thought of the shamrock with its three delicate leaves as a sacred plant and that it could ward off evil.
